Matchmaker vs matrimony site: which suits a busy professional?
By Deepesh Patel, Co-founder and Lead Matchmaker · Published 11 October 2026 · Last reviewed 11 October 2026
For most Indian families the choice is between a matrimony site, a traditional bureau, or a private matchmaker. Online matrimony is growing, but older estimates suggest fewer than one in ten Indian marriages were arranged online [1], and offline matrimony remains several times larger than online [2]. Here is how the two main options compare for someone with little time.
How do they differ?
| What you buy | Site: access to a database. Matchmaker: a managed, private search. |
|---|---|
| Your time | Site: you search, screen and message. Matchmaker: they do it; you meet. |
| Privacy | Site: your profile is visible to members. Matchmaker: shared only with people you agree to meet. |
| Verification | Varies on both; ask exactly what is checked and for whom. |
| Cost | Site: subscriptions. Matchmaker: much higher fees; see our cost guide. |
Some large platforms also offer assisted, higher-priced services alongside their main site, such as EliteMatrimony [3], so the line between the two is not always sharp.
When a matrimony site is the better choice
If you have time to browse and message, want the widest possible pool, and are comfortable doing your own screening, a site is the efficient option.
When a matchmaker is the better choice
If you are short on time, need discretion because of your work or family, want every introduction verified, or are searching across countries, a matchmaker's managed search is worth considering. Read how much a matchmaker costs in India before you decide.
